Today after a period of four weeks of extreme cold, I decided to check at the bees' wellbeing. To my horror, there was no life, every bee was dead. Some lay on the hive floor in a heap, others were were still huddled (but dead) on the frames. It appears they starved to death since there was no honey in the frames even though the bag of sugar was three quarters full. This seems to suggest the bees found it too cold to climb to the sugar and get the food. At the beginning of December they had been alive!
